Wax Advice from a proven Ottawa veteran ski waxer, Alan Mortimer.

In case someone asks here is what I’ve learned over the last 20 years of waxing at Nakkertok.

This weekend Friday is going to be pretty much blind as the temperature is supposed to drop from Thursday morning through to race time.  More importantly the snow will continue to dry out.  So these are the things that typically work for specific conditions.

1:  Toko diabloc red.  This is more often than anything the best glide wax if it is in the temperature range.  In new (really new flaky) snow try Swix HF or perhaps Vahuti.
2:  If it warms up above diabloc red I would probably shift to Vhauti  purple and pink HF.
3:  If we get a freezing rain crust that needs to be chewed up by the groomer, flouo waxes with molybdenum have worked well, particularly Swix Black Devil.  Graphite is a disaster under the same circumstances
4: Powders:  I have had most success with Vhauti , Rex and Start.  For some reason swix is either right on or it will miss by a mile, so I’ll test but would never put it on without testing carefully.
5:  Depending on what happens with grooming the snow will be abrasive so harden the skis with Swix CH4.

I’ll test Thursday morning so that the results are available by 2:00 pm. Thursday on my twitter account @alan_mortimer.  I’ll also post what I am testing the night before after I prep skis.  We will also do structure tests using Gatineau Nordic grinds and report them.  Hopefully we can post them on site, but that may depend on the race organization.

Have a great weekend and good luck waxing. Alan.
