XC Camp Update
Posted on Thursday, January 03, 2008

 Hello Campers!

Here we are with the first XC Camp update of 2008!

As many of you already know, I made the announcement that I will be taking a step back from the management of the XC Camps. The Silver Star Mountain Resort group will be taking over the camps, as was always envisioned, and I will be playing my part to maintain  continuity. It is time for changes and you folks will be invited to  join in on making those changes. In the immediate future, you will  get the XC Camp updates from me and/or from Glenn Bond, the Nordic  Manager at Silver Star Mountain.

The camps this past season were very interesting in that we had  limited snow in the Village area and great snow up on our north and east facing trails. The skiing got better as the camps progressed as we had snow storms passing through and by the end of the camps, we were skiing on the lower trails. The day the camps ended, we had 8" of new snow and then, two days later it rained for 2 days, very unusual for our Resort. Since then and through Xmas, it has snowed continuously with temperatures in the -10 range. Skiing is as good as  it gets!

Marty Hall, who most of the "older campers" will know, was up with a group of friends from Ottawa. He had a mishap and slipped in the  driveway of his home on the Mountain and landed on the hip he had had replaced 5 years ago. The femur fractured and he had to have a big operation whereby a sophisticated "hose clamp" was put around the top  of the femur. After convalescing for three weeks here in Vernon, he is now at his home in Ottawa and believes he will be back skiing on easy trails by February.

Regarding the camps, many options for keeping what we have developed and lots of ideas for the future were under discussion. The opportunity for you to get involved is outlined below and we look  forward to the discussions to follow.

---------------------------------------------------------------
 Dear Silver Star campers:

During the closing days of the most recent cross country ski camp at Silver Star, a couple of campers were chatting about how valuable it  would be to stay in communication with the coaches, organizers and other campers in between camps. During the camp there are always lots of great ideas floating around about how the camp might improve, but there was no way to continue the conversation once everyone leaves the camp.

These same two campers took the initiative of setting up a group site on Facebook called "Silver Star XC-Ski Camp" so that we all had a way to stay in touch with each other over the year, discuss ways to improve the camp, share pics, videos, thoughts... anything we want. Facebook might not be the "right" site for the purpose, but it's a start!

I'd like to invite each of you to join the new Silver Star XC-Ski Camp site on Facebook. You'll find a link to the site below. If you already have an account on Facebook, simply click on the "Join Group"  link to join. If you don't yet have an account, creating a Facebook account is easy (and, most importantly, free).

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7031342251

Once you've joined the group, please feel free to upload pictures or videos that you think would be of interest to the group. There a "discussion" area of the site that will allow us to discuss specific topics and generally keep in touch with each other.

I look forward to seeing you online!

All the best,

 Norm
